Abortion Laws

What has changed about legal abortion in Texas?

In the state of Texas, effective September 1, 2021, once a heartbeat has been detected on a sonogram, both forms of early abortion—both surgical and medication abortions—are illegal. The heart starts beating 21 days after conception; however, the heartbeat cannot typically be detected on a sonogram until around 6 weeks of pregnancy, which is 2 weeks after a missed period.
